Homologies and relationships of fin rays and their deeper supports are reviewed, and the terminology reduced. Dermal rays consist of 2 different components, alone or variously combined: (1) cerato-trichia, embryonically and primitively paired rods, which may or may not attain relationship with scale rows, and which are of general occurrence from Ostracoderms to Osteichthyes; (2) scale rows, which tend to align with, fuse with, or replace the preceding; in the latter case they become lepidotrichia. Pterygiophores are deeper pieces with specific relationship to fin rays by way of fin muscles; the term includes "radials" and "basals." Supraneurals and infrahaemals are detached elements of neural and haemal spines having no direct relation to fins. Evidence on the fin-fold theory is considered to be inadequate or illusory. The fossil evidence usually offered is subject to other interpretation, while the anatomical and embryological "evidence" is attributed to differential growth rate of body and limbs, and other correlated conditions widespread in vertebrate embryos but without phylogenetic significance. It is suggested that fins arose in connection with median and paired spines in Ostracoderms.
