Aquatic plants are an important component of a lake eco-system. When located in recreational use areas, however, they can become a nuisance targeted for control. Several aquatic plant control alternatives are available to the lake property owner, each with advantages, disadvantages, and limitations. This workshop explored the available alter-natives and ways of integrating the advantages of several methods into an organized plant control program to meet the needs of a diverse lake community. Alternatives included herbicides, mechanical harvesting, rototilling, bot-tom blankets, and diver dredging. The workshop explored the use of whole-lake planning to identify target areas in need of control and protection and to identify the optimum alternatives. To resolve the conflicts between anglers, swimmers, boaters, and other lake users, lake zoning was discussed.
