Examined a family affected with fragile X syndrome (FXS) and bipolar psychiatric disorder. Data on psychiatric history were gathered using a modified version of the Schedule of Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia—Lifetime Version for 18 of the 27 living members. Data for 14 unavailable family members (FMs) were obtained from their closest relatives using the Family History-Research Diagnostic Criteria. FMs were considered affected if they had any bipolar disorder, major depression, recurrent, or schizoaffective disorder, bipolar type. Blood samples were obtained on 25 available FMs for karyotyping and marker analysis. There was no linkage between bipolar disorder and FXS; however, findings suggest a separate proximal bipolar locus near factor IX in this family.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2018 APA, all rights reserved)
