The material is submitted to wet oxidation with HNO 3 and H2S04, care being taken to avoid overheating ha the early stages and to remove all the HNO3 in the final stage. To the resulting solution, after dilution, 1 ml. of 50 per cent. KI solution and 1 ml. of 40 per cent. SnCl2 are added and the whole heated to boiling, the As being converted, to the tervalent condition. The As is then liberated as AsH3 in a Gutzeit pot and the AsH3 passed by a capillary tube into a mixture of 5 ml. of 0.02 N iodine solution and 1 ml. of N NaHCO, , the As being oxidized to quinquevalent H3AsO4, which is evaluated on a Spekker absorptiometer by the intense blue colour produced by reduction of the arsenomolybdate. The necessary precautions are detailed.-W. Godden.
