Ultraviolet irradiation of undivided gonidia ofVolvox cartericauses these gonidia to form a high percentage of daughter colonies with one or more missing gonidia. The colonies produced are otherwise normal in morphology and produce completely normal colonies in the next generation. These results are interpreted to mean that the distribution of gonidia in mature asexual colonies reflects the distribution in the undivided gonidium of a UV-labile morphogenetic substance.
