To whom do British Members of Parliament respond when votingin the House of Commons? Using a series of votes on abortion,the revealed preferences of MPs are estimated. The resultsindicate that constituency characteristics matter, but theyalso underline the central importance of party. Even whendiscipline is not imposed, the Members of the three largestparties are distinct from one another. Moreover, there is anoteworthy interaction between constituency and party: themore marginal the seat, the more extreme the position. Membersappear to react to electoral threat by reinforcing partisanbona fides with their local party rather than conforming tothe median, recognizing the importance of partisanship forelectoral success and the role of local party resources.
