Despite the high value of clinical examination of the perionychium, radiographs remain necessary if a deep mass beneath the nail plate is suspected. Ultrasonography may be helpful to depict a cystic or a vascular component of a tumor. Computed tomography is only indicated to accurately assess thin abnormalities of the cortex of the distal phalanx as in osteoid osteomas. MRI offers the most promising developments for imaging of the perionychium.
