This study was conducted to clarify the mechanisms underlying the hypocholesterolemic effect of Lactobacillus GG (strain GG) on hypercholesterolemia in rats. Wistar rats were fed cholesterol-enriched diets supplemented with strain GG lyophilized cells for 3 weeks. The serum total cholesterol level was significantly lower in rats fed GG cells (GG) than in rats fed only cholesterol-enriched diets (Control), during the feeding period (p < 0.05). After the feeding period, the liver cholesterol accumulation was inhibited by the intake of GG cells. The serum bile acid level in the GG group was also lower than that in the control group. The fecal excretions of cholesterol and bile acid were significantly promoted in the GG group compared with the control group (p < 0.05). These results show that the hypocholesterolemic action of strain GG was due to the suppression of cholesterol absorption and bile acid reabsorption into the enterohepatic circulation.
