Wristwatch-type information devices, so-called smart watches, are excellent for telecare services because they are normally close to users and can continuously sense user activities. However, as they are still immature devices compared to smartphones, their usage and applicability for telecare services are not known. In this paper, we propose and evaluate a peer-to-peer (P2P) telecare system using smart watches and wireless biosensors. In particular, we implement P2P communication protocols on this smart-watch-based telecare system and evaluate its communication performance. To ensure efficient implementation of the smart watch model, we use a “publisher/subscriber architecture” as an internal data processing architecture of a smart watch. Owing to the loosely-coupled, extensible nature of this architecture, the system can flexibly control the processes and destinations of sensor data based on their keywords. We first describe an overview of the system that enables care-persons to share the physiological status of the cared persons on smart watches. Next, we describe P2P communication protocols and their implementation, and show experimental results of their communication performance (e.g., packet losses and delay times) in different network configurations. The results shows that the latest smart watches together with efficient implementation of the communication protocols can provide telecare services.
