There has long been a great need for a direct spectro-photometric method for the determination of small amounts of chloride. Such a procedure is now pro-posed, based on the use of iron (III) perchlorate. Chloro complexes of iron (III) exhibit an intense absorption band in the vicinity of 340 µ and lend themselves to quantitative measurement. The proposed procedure is accurate and relatively free from interferences. Large amounts of sulfate tend to interfere. However, the method can be used in the presence of the other halides and practically all other common ions.
