Using potentiodynamic electrochemical techniques to endodontic files and reamers indicated drastic differences in behavior depending on carbon or stainless steel, irrigating solution, presence or absence of protein matter, and type and concentration of inhibitor. Factors that increased the electrochemical activity were the use of carbon steel and solutions of sodium hypochlorite and EDTA-Na containing protein matter. Hydrogen peroxide and especially EDTA-Na solution depressed the polarization trends to less active behavior compared with sodium hypochlorite solution. Sodium silicate, except in 50% citric acid, was the only effective inhibitor, which at the 3% level, increased the potential of breakdown 0.8 v in some cases. Solutions of sodium pyrophosphate, sodium nitrite, sodium fluoride, sodium benzoate, benzotriazole, aqueous sol, and surfactant all proved ineffective.
