The papers in this volume reflect the increasing interest among Chinese geologists in understanding the history of the mobile belts that separate the major Precambrian cratons. The areas discussed by the authors in this volume are shown in Fig. 1 and the locations of provinces, autonomous regions, and other places of interest can be found in Fig. 1 of the paper by Dong Shenbao (this volume).In the opening paper, Dong Sbeabao presents an overview of the metamorphic domains that correspond closely to the main tectonic elements of China. The author introduces Chinese ideas about basic types of metamorphism, many of which correspond closely with types of metamorphism recognized in the European-language literature. Although plate-tectonic concepts are recognized and utilized by many workers today in China, information is commonly not sufficient to permit a detailed interpretation of the metamorphic domains in a platetectonic context.
