In this chapter, we discuss how user interface (UI) design patterns can assist in bridging the gap between requirements and design in software development, and the research challenges posed by their use. Completed and ongoing research done by the authors and co-workers on UI pattern use in transaction processing and E-commerce system development and evaluation is used to illustrate the discussion.
