Nilsson (1958) initiated electron microscopic studies of the endometrium of the mouse and rat with his paper on mouse uterine surfaces. However, in this and other early transmission electron microscopic (TEM) studies of uterine luminal epithelial cells, no mention was made of protrusions from the surface other than microvilli. Warren and Enders (1964) reported ectoplasmic protrusions from the luminal epithelial cells of the rat during delayed implantation but otherwise ignored these structures. In a more detailed study of the occurrence of the projections from the rat endometrial surface under different hormonal conditions, Nilsson (1966) noted that the change from projections and regular microvilli to an irregular surface lacking projections was indicative of changes from the preimplantation to implantation condition in the uterus. Vokaer and Leroy (1962) had demonstrated trypan blue uptake by the rat uterine luminal epithelium, but it was not until a series of scanning electron microscopic (SEM) studies of the uterine luminal surface that interest in the apical projections was rekindled. Nilsson (1972) noted “morel-like” projections from the rat uterine luminal surface and speculated that such projections might be secretory. Psychoyos and Mandon called such projections “sea—anemonae—like” and suggested that they might be endocytic or involved in passage of information in either direction. Bergstrom (1972) showed that in the mouse such projections could come into close association with the blastocyst in preimplanta-tion or delayed implantation conditions. Somewhat similar projections were reported in a SEM study of human uterine luminal epithelial cells by Ferenczy et al.
