Hypnotic theory has long been encumbered by concepts such as dissociation, suggestion, ideomotor activity, and automatism. Al though useful distinctions are embedded in these concepts, they are incomplete and at times misleading. This paper will attempt to re-synthesize the implications of these concepts in a somewhat dif ferent fashion.
