Some behavioral effects of alcohol were attributed to expectancies. The domain of alcohol reinforcement expectancies were studied by developing a questionnaire from interviews with 125 males and females of widely diversified drinking backgrounds, statistically refining this questionnaire using responses from an additional 400 subjects, administering the refined version to 440 nonalcoholic [human] subjects and factor analyzing the refined questionnaire. The 6 independent expectancies extracted were that alcohol tranforms experiences in a positive way, enhances social and physical pleasure, enhances sexual performance and experience, increases power and aggression, increases social assertiveness and reduces tension. Canonical variate analysis clarified relationships between these factors and subjects'' customary alcohol use and demography. The more global factors were related to light consumption, while an increased expectation of sexual and aggressive behavior was found in heavier drinking subjects. The theoretical and practical import of these findings is discussed.
