Adult D. nevadensis containing large and small amounts of carotenoid pigment were exposed to 1.2 mW/cm2 of visible blue light at 8.degree. and 20.degree. C. Darkly pigmented copepods survived significantly longer than lightly pigmented copepods at both temperatures. Copepods survived longer at 8.degree. C than at 20.degree. compared to studies of carotenoid photoprotection in bacteria.
