Seedsof S. asiatica(-S. lutea) were germinated in a solution produced by growing a variety ofSorghum vulgare[Sorghum bicolor](susceptible to attack byStriga) in pots of sand and eluting the sand with water. The effect of light of different quality on the growth of theStrigaradicle was studied, together with the effect of GA and kinetin on growth of theStrigaseedlings. The main effects of light (the most effective band being the blue) were a reduction in extension of radicle growth, an increase in radicle diameter, production of root hairs, and an occasional proliferation of cells into a branch-like swelling of the radicle. GA and kinetin (known to produce certain effects which resemble those caused by light) induced shoot development and branching of the radicle and it was concluded that the parasite probably depends for its growth on a supply of growth factors of this type from the host plant. There was also indication that a factor with strong morphogenic influence on the development ofStrigaseedlings was present in the rhizosphere of the host plant (Sorghum vulgare[Sorghum bicolor]var.). From the results obtained and those of Worsham [Fld Crop Abstr.13: 933] it is concluded that one of the components of the germination complex may be a kinetin-like compound, of which the concentration required forStrigagermination would be less than that required for morphogenic effects.-M.H.
