The effects are described of serotonin and some other monoamines, of antiserotonins, aromatic amino acids and monoamine oxidase inhibitors, and mechanical stimulation, on the muscular and myoid activities of the pluteus larva. The results are tentatively discussed in relation to the role of serotonin in the control of larval functions. The role of the cilia as sensitive structures is emphasized. Exogenous serotonin is assumed to interfere at superficial as well as deeper levels, but a detailed intepretation of the effects must await further studies.
