Collaborative work on the development of an accelerator-based epithermal neutron beam is underway between the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA and Science Research Laboratory, Inc., Somerville, MA. Design of the major hardware components of the accelerator, a 4 mA tandem electrostatic device, commenced one year ago in July 1991. Completion of this machine is expected to require approximately one more year. A low-current prototype accelerator (maximum current 1 mA) has been constructed by SRL and is being used to carry out experimental testing of a moderator/reflector epithermal beam-line assembly. This paper provides an overview of the progress made to date (September 1992) toward the goal of a clinically-useful accelerator-based epithermal neutron beam.
