For a connected semisimple real Lie groupGof non-compact type, Wallach introduced a class ofK-types calledsmall. We classify all smallK-types for all simple Lie groups and prove except just one case that eachelementary spherical functionfor each smallK-typecan be expressed as a product of hyperbolic cosines and aHeckman–Opdam hypergeometric function. As an application, the inversion formula for the spherical transform onis obtained from Opdam’s theory onhypergeometric Fourier transforms.
