Representative of such centres is the market town ofFeilding. With its five thousand inhabitants, Feilding is the second largest urban settlement in the Manawatu region of the North Island. The town benefits from its situation on the North Island Main Trunk Railway, ninety-nine miles from the metropolitan centre of Welling-ton. Some residents suggest that Feilding is handicapped by the proximity of its city neighbour, Palmerston North, twelve miles to the south. Twelve miles to the southeast is the narrow Manawatu Gorge, which provides the only low altitude east-west route in the southern portion of the island. Thus Fcilding has that important geographic factor of central location, particularly with reference to the southern half of the North Island (Fig. 1). Its situation at the junction of the Oroua Valley and the Manawatu Plain is of special significance to the town. The small Oroua River forms the eastern boundary of the borough and is of industrial import-ance. Except for a small residential area on the hillside, Feilding occupies
