Chronic ethanol consumption consistently resulted in mild hypertension in male Wistar rats. The ethanol-treated animals also had reduced 24 h urinary output and significant Na retention when compared to controls. Total plasma volume was estimated using indicator dilution, and an increase of 20% was observed in the ethanol-treated animals. Vascular smooth muscle responsiveness to noradrenaline [norepinephrine] in vitro was not different between the 2 groups of animals. The blood pressure elevation in the ethanol-treated animals was probably associated with Na retention and plasma volume expansion, and probably not related to altered vascular responsiveness.
