Bis (cyclopentadienyl) lanthanide and yttrium halide complexes are basic precursorsin the organometallic chemistry of these elements. 2" 6 Their synthesis is of fundamental importance to the field, and their structural parameters provide straightforward benchmarks upon which to evaluate more complex systems. Recent investigations of organoyttrium and organolanthanide chemistry in our laboratories have resulted in thepreparation of X-ray-quality crystals of the three halide complexes (C5Me5) 2YCl (THF)(I),(C5Me5) 2SmCl (THF)(II), and (C5Me5) 2SmI (THF)(III). The structures of each of these com-plexes have been determined and are reported herein. Sincethese are the first (C5Me5) 2LnX (THF) complexes (X= halide) to be structurally characterized, theyprovide useful, basic structural data in the rapidly growing area2" 46 of bis (pentamethylcyclo-(1)(a) Alfred P.
