The giant octupole resonance has been investigated for heavy nuclei (A ⩾ 120) in 172 MeV α scattering at scattering angles between 3° and 5°. For deformed rare earth and actinide nuclei an increase in width (up to ∼ 2 MeV) and a shift in centroid energy (of about 1 MeV) have been found. The energy shift was opposite in the rare earth and actinide region indicating different nuclear structure effects.
