THESE conference proceedings contain a somewhat mixed bag of papers on optics in quality assurance, covering subjects from automated measurement and inspection systems to standards and training. The first session opens with a forecast of future trends in the use of automated inspection systems which seems to be optimistic in time-scale in view of current acceptance rates in industry. The paper on laser safety will be of limited use to non-American readers, as will the fourth contribution, from an American University department which specializes in electro-optics training, although useful tips may be gained. A short description of the iodine stabilized laser as a length standard is also included, and seems of little relevance to quality assurance engineers. The second session, about available off-the-shelf inspection equipment, contains a good mix of papers on different (and in some cases competing) inspection and measurement techniques, including laser scanners, solid-state array detectors,'optical computing'with diffraction techniques, and lateral effect photodiodes. Some interesting case studies are given. Informative papers are also presented on laser interferometry in metrology, as applied mainly to machine control, and on particle sizing by laser scattering techniques. As with much of this conference, care must be exercised by the reader in bearing in mind the commerical bias of the participants. The next two sessions contained only one paper each, the first being concerned with non-destructive evaluation of food. The electro-optic techniques described consist mainly of various types of spectrometry for applications such as colour sorting of small items, ripeness of fruit, and so on. The second of these short sessions comprises a paper in which several inspection techniques are used in a complex instrument system for inspecting cartridge cases, including dimensional measurement with CCD imagers and flaw inspection by laser scatter and eddy currents.
