Mechanical stress accelerates the transformation of the tetragonal into the hexagonal form of polybutene-1 (II to I-transformation). In unaxial tensile tests a measurable acceleration of the transformation begins only above the yield point. Since the yield point corresponds essentially to a shear deformation of a material, one may assume that the crystal-crystal transition is induced by shear. To confirm this assumption the transformation was investigated in a biaxial stress field using a new experimental technique. The evaluation of the results showed that the transformation is not accelerated by shear but by normal stresses only. On the basis of these results a model is discussed, which explains the different components of stress with respect to the transformation.
