The veterinary surgeon has a role to play in the care of invertebrates, many of which are kept as pets and for educational and scientific purposes.
Some of those species commonly maintained in captivity are listed and their accommodation, feeding, handling and restraint are outlined. Invertebrate diseases may be due to (or associated with) infectious agents, parasites, environmental changes, trauma, faulty nutrition or poisons and each of these is discussed briefly. Particular attention is drawn to the need for good management and preventive measures, especially hygiene.
