Where there are relatively uniform, structurally simple, habitats, noncolonial birds breeding at high density hold territories which should be polyhedral in shape. Observations of territorial behavior of Calidris melanotos, a sandpiper which breeds on arctic tundra, support this suggestion. Some territories were certainly angular and not circular. Calculations of angles between pairs of boundaries held in common with two adjacent neighbors. indicate an approach to a hexahedral (hexagonal) shape.
