The reasons for the formation of dry hot valleys (DHV) in Yunnan Province, China from view of climate and geographical conditions are briefly described, and the historical and present status of its vegetation is analysed. Some of the pilot research projects that have been carried out to demonstrate new silvicultural techniques for re-vegetating DHV are presented.
