There is accumulating evidence that RANKL also plays an important role in pathological bone destruction, such as that in postmenopausal osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). It has been reported that RANKL transcripts were expressed abundantly in the bone tissue of ovariectomized rats [1], and we and other groups recently reported that RANKL was highly expressed in the synovial tissues of RA patients [2, 3]. OPG has potent therapeutic effects on such pathological conditions, as reported by various groups: ie, OPG ameliorated bone loss in ovariectomized rats [4], adenovirus vectorinduced OPG production prevented bone loss in ovariectomized mice [5], OPG prevented bone destruction
