The importance of gastric juice as an early line of defense against bacterial enteric pathogens has been recognized for almost a century [1-3]. Although several factors (eg, digestive enzymes, chemical constituents, antibodies) were initially believed to contribute to the antibacterial activity of gastric juice [4, 5], more recent data suggest that the gastric bactericidal barrier is primarily acid dependent [6-9]. Unfortunately, little else is known about the nature of this important barrier to invasion by intestinal patho-gens. Specifically, it is not clear if bacterial enteric patho-gens differ in susceptibility to acidic gastric juice, if the presence of food interferes with the normal gastric bar-rier, or if the antibacterial activity of gastric juice can be augmented through dietary manipulations (eg, alcoholic beverages). Thus, our investigation was undertaken to:(7) characterize the relative susceptibilities to HC1 and ethanol of three species of enteropathogenic bacteria,(2) compare the abilities of the three strains of bacteria to survive in human gastric juice,(3) determine if the antibacterial ac-tivity of gastric juice is weakened by the presence of food,
