A total of 55 microsatellite loci were developed and characterized using fourPittosporumtaxa endemic to the Ogasawara (Bonin) Islands, Japan:Pittosporum boninensevar.boninense,P.boninensevar.chichijimense,Pittosporum parvifoliumvar.parvifoliumandP.parvifoliumvar.beecheyi. Transferability of these markers among the OgasawaraPittosporumtaxa as well asPittosporumtobirawas also evaluated. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 2 to 23 inP.boninensevar.boninense, from 2 to 16 inP.boninensevar.chichijimense, from 1 to 7 with inP.parvifoliumvar.parvifolium, and from 1 to 8 inP.parvifoliumvar.beecheyi. During cross-amplification tests, the majority of these loci were successfully amplified and showed moderate to high levels of genetic variation. The markers described here could be used to achieve a more accurate determination of genetic diversity and genetic structure of the taxa from which they were derived.
