An Intrepid Scot also contributes to the new social history that emerged during the 1970s and 1980s once the field of social history was liberated from political and economic master-narratives. Free from the ‘macro’view that all aspects of social life must necessarily have political or economic causes, our understanding of the past is being greatly enriched by ‘micro’studies of individuals and minority or subaltern groups. An Intrepid Scot is very much to the forefront of this new, archivally rich, social history of international relations in the early modern period and will fascinate and reward all who are interested in the history of the age when Britain was starting to emerge as a major player on the global stage.
