M inarets are generally thin and tall engineering structures such as towers. The azan is called out from the minarets five times each day by a muezzin to make people come to prayers. The earliest mosques were built without minarets. The first known minaret was constructed about 710 between Tunisia and Syria. However, in today’s technology, it is possible to build very tall minarets. The tallest minaret in the world is in the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, Morocco, which is 210 m tall. There are two 230-m-tall minarets under construction in Tehran, Iran (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minaret).
