The type of T. risbeci Lepesme is found to be a damaged specimen of Alphitobius laevigatus F., and the genus Aphanotus is made a synonym of Tribolium. 17 new spp., 1 new subsp. and 2 new forms are descr. The n. spp. are carinatum, Argentina; linsleyi, Mexico; anaphe, Nigeria; giganteum, Kenya; downsei and semele, French Sudan; sulmo, Abyssinia; thusa, S. Africa; alcine, dolon and ceto, Madagascar; freemani, Kashmir; waterhousei, Australia; parki, Larat I.; cylindricum, Malay Pen.; politum, Doerian I.; antennatum, Australia; carinatum ssp. dubium, Argentina; indicum f. ares, Sudan; and indicum f. seres, Senegal. A key to the spp. is given. Spp. are placed in 5 natural groups or subgenera as follows: (1) brevicornis group (American), (2) confusum group (African), (3) alcine group (Madagascan), (4) castaneum group (Indo-Australian), (5) myrmecophilum group (Australian). The relationship of these groups is discussed and a diagram illustrating the author''s conception of the phylogeny is presented.
