Preliminary experiments on the preservation of Laminaria cloustonii and Ascophyllum nodosum as possible feeding-stuffs for farm animals, are described and the results of analyses are tabulated. Little change in chemical composition occurred when the fresh algae were treated with SO2 gas followed by the exclusion of air and preservation was satisfactory. Algae can be ensiled without inoculation or the addition of fermentable carbohydrates. The extent of the chemical changes occurring depends on the season of harvesting the algae; Ascophyllum nodosum, however, varies less than does Laminaria cloustonii in this respect. Digestibility trials were planned but had to be abandoned because the sheep available would not accept the ensiled algae.-M.P.Laboratory and pilot scale experiments were made. When sea water with 20 per cent. NaCl added was used the seaweed was preserved, but there were major changes in composition and loss of nutrients. The addition of bactericides to sea water in sufficient quantity for preservation killed the seaweed also. Good preservation was obtained by treating the seaweed with sulphur dioxide and excluding air. Seaweed ensiled without any addition gave a good lactic acid fermentation. The conservation of the nutrients depended on the original composition of the seaweed and therefore on the season at which it was harvested. Digestibility trials were proposed but could not be made because sheep of the breed available would not eat the silage. T. D. Bell.
