A species of C oltricia collected near Laurel, Maryland was field determined by me as C. cinnamomea. Microscopic study revealed, however, that this specimen did not agree with the descriptions of the species of C oltricia treated in either Murrill's (1904) or Coker's (1946) work. Comparison of this fungus with specimens of C. cinnamomea with which it is macroscopically so similar, indicated that they are different and that this recent collection represented an undescribed species. During the summers of 1967 and 1968, I made six collections of the new species near Laurel, Maryland. A study of 88 specimens filed under the name Polyporus cinnamomeus Jacq. ex Fr.[= Coltricia cinnamomea (Jacq. ex Fr.) Murr.] at BPI 1 revealed nine additional specimens of the new species, distributed from near Washington, DC to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
