The symptoms of DDT poisoning displayed by Aedes aegypti after tarsal contact are excitation, ataxia, convulsions, general paralysis, and death. It was formerly thought by various workers that the appearance of excitation after contact with DDT was evidence of lethal poisoning. Observations during these expts. have shown that mosquitoes may recover after showing the preliminary symptoms. The excitation and consequently repellent effect of sub-lethal doses of DDT may be advantageous, as with sheep blowflies on treated wool becoming so excited they cannot lay eggs, or disadvantageous, as with house and tsetse-flies where eradication is essential. In the latter case it would be desirable to obtain a quick lethal effect and eliminate repellency.
