D. melanogaster gynandromorphs were introduced into a mating chamber containing 2 wild-type conspecific males. From the differential courting responses of these males, the only important factor that enabled a male to distinguish between conspecific males and females and to direct persistent courtship only toward females was the tissue composition of females. This is tentatively interpreted in terms of a female-specific sex pheromone. Genetic, embryological and anatomical considerations suggested that the pheromone producing cells of adult D. melanogaster females are dispersed throughout, and are part of the female''s tergites, sternites and thoracic integument. Behavorial observations indicated that as the intensity of the excitatory stimuli invoked by a gynandromorph increased, it ended to be courted more persistently and for longer periods of time. Preliminary fate mapping indicated that behavioral differences between males and females are determined by anteriorly located organ(s) and that these organ(s) can trigger behavioral responses regardless of the composition or physical structure of the target organs.
