Efforts to prevent or delay cognitive decline and the onset of neurological disorders in patients with AF is a high priority because of the significant economic and societal burden imposed by these conditions. 1 Dementia is an incurable neurodegenerative disease that affects 5.1 million individuals aged> 65 years in the United States, and its incidence is estimated to triple by the year 2050. 1 Milder forms of cognitive impairment are also highly prevalent and while they do not overtly impair activities of daily living, they can lead to greater difficulties with complex tasks, problem-solving, mild confusion, and retaining information, which can exacerbate underlying health conditions and affect quality of life. Given that the incidence of dementia, mild cognitive impairment, and AF increases with age and has devastating effects on patients and communities, evaluation of whether different treatment options prevent or delay cognitive decline and the onset of neurological disorders in patients with AF is critically important.
