identity as a disabled man in a society which the author says customarily does not allow for self-expression. He also creates videos as greeting cards and uses these to gradually return to social and family events from which he had been excluded since his accident. Later, there is in-depth analysis of Yahya’s interactions within chatrooms and how he is able to create a new specific self-identity through the discursive construction of a specific Islamic religious identity known as an ‘enlightener’. Through the creation of this identity, he is able to engage in international political discussions about Muslim Arab identity with other Muslims and to defend Islam to outsiders. The author describes how he does this through reading the Quran and then the Bible and Torah, moving from traditional views to more liberal perspectives. Through this, he establishes himself as a religious leader online and is able to shape the behaviour and views of other Muslims. The author also describes how Yahya’s agency enables him to ‘escape a “disabled” identity’ through masking his own disability online. Excerpts from these exchanges are provided in the book with careful analysis of interactions and their meanings. Disability, Discourse and Technology is useful for anyone interested in how to apply multimodal research and linguistics; and for activists and policy-makers. The methodology is complex yet clearly explained and helpful for a generalist audience. Also, this book would fascinate anyone interested in Muslim identity politics and non-western perspectives on disability and inclusion.
