In unanesthetized awake rats control procedures were quantified for the stabilization of photically evoked after-discharge (PhAD) at maximized levels, the PhAD response was compared with other components of the visually evoked response (VER), and the effects of habituation and classical trace conditioning on stabilized PhAD activity were documented. At least 3 days of exposure to experimental conditions were necessary for the development of stabilized PhAD bursting. Stabilized PhAD responding was associated with a stabilization in the other VER components. Preconditioning habituation and postconditioning habituation procedures (massed-trial extinction) resulted in an increase followed by a decrease in PhAD amplitude as a function of time. With trace conditioning of a tail-flip response, PhAD amplitude was stabilized over conditioning trials but decreased with extinction. There may be an optimal level of arousal for the evocation of PhAD, with marked activation or relaxation precluding its occurrence.
