METHODTemperature coefficients of solubility were calculated from published solubility coefficients at different temperatures. Where necessary, published coefficients were converted to Ostwald or Bunsen coefficients (Steward et al., 1973) as required (Appendix). In order to maintain a reasonable degree of accuracy, and to relate the results to biological temperatures, temperature coefficients were calculated only when the following criteria were satisfied: a single investigator measured the solubility of an agent in a substance or tissue at two or more temperatures over a range of not less than 10 C and including 37 C. The solubility coefficients for the two most widely separated temperatures in the range 0 to 45 C were used to calculate the temperature coefficient according to the methods given in the Appendix. Over 50 papers (marked with an asterisk in the list of references) provided data which satisfied these criteria and yielded nearly 200 temperature coefficients. In 12 instances a regression line was fitted to all the data from a single paper for a given agent and solvent; but this gave closely similar results to the simple procedure of using only the solubilities for the highest and lowest temperatures. The simple procedure was therefore used routinely.
