Maternal mouthbrooding cichlids have generally been categorized as sexually dichromatic (eg, Baerends & Baerends-van Roon, 1950; Trewavas, 1983) with the males being brighter than the females. It is believed that this is related to the polygynous mating system of these species, which puts a selective pressure on the males to exhibit conspicuous colouration for the purpose of mate attraction. While male breeding colour patterns have been studied in detail for Oreochromis mossambicus (Baerends & Baerends-van Roon, 1950; Neil, 1964; Lanzing & Bower, 1974) and 0. niloticus (Falter, 1987, in press), observations on female reproductive patterns are less complete.Although some evidence shows that not all polygynous maternal mouthbrooders are sexually dichromatic during courtship and spawning (eg, Turner, 1986), the most recent comprehensive review of the mouthbrooding tilapiine fishes (Trewavas, 1983) characterizes Oreochroniis as sexually dichromatic arena spawners. However, following observations by the present authors independently (here identified by our initials) we conclude that this statement needs to be qualified.
