THE remarkably high conductivity of charge-transfer complexes of quinones with aromatic amines and hydrocarbons has been examined by a number of investigators1,2. Since a correlation between the electron affinity of the acceptor and the strength of the complex is predicted3, the large electrode potential (E0≈1.0 V)4of 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyanobenzoquinone (DDQ) indicates it should be a particularly good acceptor for the formation of strong complexes. Foster and Thomson5demonstrated the ionie character of the complex of DDQ withN,N,N′,N′-tetramethyl-p-phenylenediamine. We wish to compare the physical properties of some complexes consisting of DDQ complexed with an aromatic amine and with two hydrocarbons.
