Bytinski-Salz ('29a), and many others. Not only has heteroplastic transplantation between closely related species been successful, but often also senoplastic transplantation, as between urodele and anuran embryos. Since the objectives of these studies were primarily embryological, only isolated observations were made on the humoral and cellular responses of the host and the ultimate fate of the graft. The important facts which these few studies have provided ma:-be summarized as follows. It is known that embryonic grafts between urodeles and anurans fail in many instances owing to the presence of toxic substances which directly damage the alien grafts. Bytinski-Salz ('29b), Cotronei and Perri ('34), and others have shown, for example, that embryonic grafts or extracts from certain anurans such as Pelobates fuscus or Bufo viridis will kill urodele embryos, thus precluding senoplastic transplantations. On the other hand, these toxic factors are slight or absent in early embryos of forms such as Bombinator igneus and Hyla arborea; urodele implants here may not only persist but undergo differentiation and growth.
