Shutoff of host RNA synthesis after T7 infection is under the control of an early phage gene. A mutant which lacks the ability to shut off host transcription is deleted in the region to the left of gene 1 (RNA polymerase). This mutant fails to synthesize one of the early proteins of about 40,000 molecular weight.
