November 1992), Pinkerton and Abramson asked," Can a well informed, emotionally stable adult make a rationaldecision to engage in risky sexual practices?"(p. 561). Their answer is yes, if" rational" is defined in the following way. A person faced with three sexual options—abstinence," safer sex," and" risky sex"—assigns to each a utility (u) and a probability of becoming infected with HIV (p). Becoming infected with HTV is considered equivalent to contracting AIDS, which is assumed to have a highly negative utility (uA). When the expected utility of risky sex is greater than that of the other options (which can occur if the perceived pleasure of risky sex is relatively great and the perceived risk of HIV infection is relatively small), the rational actor opts for risky sex. In short, if a person engages in risky sex, this does not necessarily indicate, in Pinkerton and Abramson's view, that he or she is suicidal or has been vacationing on Pluto for the last decade and has missed the" safer sex" messages that pervade the mass media.Because each term in the" expected utility" equation is inherently subjective, it is not possible to ask whether a given option is objectively rational. It is possible, however, to extend Pinkerton and Abramson's analysis by considering the following questions: First, how accurately do people assess the probability that they will become infected with HIV? Second, how does the risk of becoming infected with HIV compare with other kinds of risk?(For the purposes of this discussion, I will assume that HIV infection is both necessary and sufficient to cause AIDS.) If people systematically underestimate their risk of HIV infection and
