When a human being is asked to fixate, he rotates his eye causing the image of the fixation targetto fall within his foveal bouquet-the part of his retina where he sees details best. If he is then asked to maintain fixation on the target, his eye makes a consistent but idiosyncratic pattern of slow and fast miniature eyemovements. This maintained fixation pattern has traditionally been considered to be" involuntary,"" spontaneous," or" reflexive," largely because these eyemovements are extremely small (much smaller than ordinarv voluntary motor acts), and also because the individual is not ordinarily aware of intending to make or of actually making any of these small eye movements (1). We believe that the traditional view is not entirely correct.
